The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) on April 30, 2024. The signing took place between Mr. Ohba, Director General of JICA, and Mr. Schaal, Director General of the International Cooperation Relations Department of the OECD.
The year 2024 marks the 60th anniversary of Japan’s accession to the OECD and the 70th anniversary of the start of ODA. While confirming the longstanding cooperative relationship between JICA and the OECD in the field of development, we agreed to further deepen our collaboration with the aim of contributing to the economic and social development of Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region.
The year 2024 also marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Southeast Asia Regional Program (SEARP), a program of dialogue and cooperation between the OECD and ASEAN countries, as well as the Japanese government’s chairmanship of the OECD Ministerial Council (*1). Prime Minister Kishida mentioned the memorandum of understanding recently signed between JICA and the OECD, and stated that JICA and the OECD would work together in development cooperation to co-create a sustainable future.
In the future, JICA will promote cooperation with the OECD in the areas of climate change mitigation, robust and sustainable supply chains, a global rules-based trading system, accelerating the digital economy and innovation, and improving the investment climate/private sector involvement (*2).
