On April 25, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), together with Sumitomo Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Sumitomo) and Hankyu Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Hankyu Corporation), concluded an agreement for the operation and maintenance of the Manila Light Rail Transit System Line 1 (hereinafter referred to as LRT Line 1), an urban passenger railroad connecting north and south in Metro Manila in the Republic of the Philippines. The project is a joint venture between JICA and Hankyu Corporation of the Philippines. This project is the first overseas investment in railroad operation and maintenance for JICA and Hankyu Corporation, and will encourage Japanese companies to expand their high-quality infrastructure business overseas.
The Philippines boasts one of the highest economic growth rates among ASEAN countries, and its population is expected to continue to increase over the next several decades. The LRT Line 1 is one of the most important transportation networks in Metro Manila, with a line length of approximately 20 km. The LRT Line 1 is expected to play an important role in supporting the development of Metro Manila, with a southern extension of approximately 7 kilometers scheduled to open in 2024 and five new stations to be installed.
