Grant Aid Gift Agreement Signed for Kenya: Contributing to Global Health with Kenya as a Hub | News & Media

Posted on 2024-05-082024-05-16 by Editor in Chief

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the Kenyan government in Nairobi, Kenya, on April 26 for a grant of up to 3.056 billion yen for the “Kenya Central Institute of Medical Sciences Research Enhancement Project.

Infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria are among the top six health hazards in Kenya, and even in recent years, sudden outbreaks of various infectious diseases have been reported due to inadequate public health measures. In the epidemic of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), in addition to the tightening of the medical system, people’s lives and the socioeconomy were severely affected. Since its establishment in 1979, Japan has supported the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for about half a century in the development of research departments, laboratories, and other facilities, as well as in the training of human resources for research on tropical infectious diseases. In response to COVID-19, the institute has played a central role in PCR testing in Kenya and has been commissioned to conduct performance testing of test kits for use in Africa, thereby contributing to the fight against infectious diseases beyond national borders.

On the other hand, the existing facilities are not equipped to handle research on emerging infectious diseases and testing and diagnosis of high-risk pathogens. In order to respond to emerging infectious disease outbreaks that may occur in the future, it is necessary to improve facilities and equipment to strengthen both infectious disease research and testing and diagnosis functions.

This project will provide KEMRI with facilities and equipment for research on infectious diseases and early response to testing and diagnosis, thereby strengthening research capabilities for various infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and thereby contributing to strengthening the capacity to respond to health crises in Kenya and in Africa, particularly in the East African region, thereby Contribute to SDG Goal 3 (Ensure healthy lives and promote the welfare of all).
