The Tokyo Metropolitan Government will begin showing “Ukiyo,” a new work based on the theme of Ukiyo-e, on May 18 as part of “TOKYO Night & Light,” a year-round project to decorate the first main government building of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government with projection mapping.
As a new tourist resource to enjoy the night in Tokyo, the east wall of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1, one of the landmarks of the city, is being used as a canvas for the projection of light and sound art. The new artwork depicts Ukiyoe, a colorful depiction of life in the Edo period, and the diverse cultures of Japan as they have changed over time.
The collaboration between the AI-generated visuals and the creators’ CG is said to be a highlight of the exhibition, as the paintings’ worldviews provide a context for today’s pop culture.
Screenings will be held on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays only, starting May 18, with three showings each day (from 7:30 p.m. / 8:30 p.m. / 9:30 p.m.). For the time being, each screening will be held after “Godzilla: Attack on Tokyo Metropolitan Government”.
