ANA Upcycles a Belt Loader that Would Have Been Scrapped into an EV

Posted on 2024-05-202024-06-07 by Editor in Chief

ANA Motor Service upcycled the baggage carriers (belt loaders) used at the airport for disposal from diesel engines to EV vehicles.

The EV was a belt loader that had been used at Narita Airport for 20 years since 1994 and was to be scrapped in 2022. At the initiative of a company employee, after repair and restoration, the structure was remodeled and designed, the electric circuit was assembled, and a special EV battery, motor, and reduction gear were installed.

The EV can be recharged from general electric power via a charger, and all of its power source, including the cargo handling portion, is electric power. 60 minutes of recharging is expected to be enough for one day of flights at Haneda Airport, and the EV is expected to be used continuously for another 15 years.

The paint design was commissioned to Mr. Xun Kuse, the designer of the ANA Future Promise Jet, and the aircraft is scheduled to resume operations at Haneda Airport by the summer of 2024.

The company will continue to convert vehicles to EVs for disposal and aims to develop this initiative as one of the ANA Group’s solutions for decarbonization on the ground.
