The Berlin Tourist Board held a seminar for the press in Tokyo on May 17.
A mission team from Tokyo visited Japan to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Tokyo and Berlin in 2024. Mr. Burkhardt Kieker, representative of the Berlin Tourism Bureau, explained that the number of Japanese who visited Berlin from January to March 2024 increased by more than 50% from the previous year, and expressed his hope for a further increase in Japanese visitors, saying, “We see this as a revenge consumption after Corona, and Japanese are thinking of coming to Central Europe, especially Eastern Europe. He expressed hope for a further increase in the number of Japanese visitors.
The seminar was themed on “Summer” in Berlin, with presentations by Kieker, Ralf Ostendorf, Director of International Marketing, Berlin Tourist Board, Susanne Schreiber, Director of Public Relations, and Lutz Henke, Director of Cultural Programs Promotion.
Noting that the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics will be held from July 26 to August 11, Kieker said, “Paris will be full with prices going up and rooms filling up,” and suggested Berlin as another option besides Paris.
According to the German Tourist Board, Germany will host the quadrennial soccer festival UEFA EURO 2024 from June 14 to July 14, with five of the matches and the final to be held at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
Kikker said, “We expect more than 2 million visitors during the four-week event. Berlin can supply 300,000 beds a day, and accommodations can still be booked,” he appealed. He also introduced the “Berlin Welcome Card,” which includes unlimited public transportation and discounts on facilities.
According to Ostendorf, in conjunction with EURO 2024, the road in front of the Brandenburg Gate will be covered with grass and a fan zone will be set up with the gate as a goal. The fan zone will allow people without stadium admission tickets to watch the public viewing.
He also promoted the fact that 2024 is the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He introduced various exhibitions and events planned, including an open-air exhibition of “Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall” at the Stasi Museum, and proposed a bicycle tour around the ruins of the Berlin Wall.
In addition to this, Mr. Henke explained Berlin’s diverse culture at the seminar. He said that Berlin is home to the World Heritage-listed “Museum Island,” which will celebrate its bicentennial in 2025, and that its eight museums, including the Humboldt Forum (Berlin’s Royal Palace), a cultural complex that opened in 2021, are highlights of the city and host a wide variety of exhibitions. In addition, he explained that the “Museum of the 20th Century” is scheduled to open at the Cultural Forum in 2026.
