Tokaido Shinkansen to introduce a system to automate visual inspections conducted on foot.

Posted on 2024-05-232024-06-07 by Editor in Chief

On May 22, JR Tokai announced the visual inspection system for Tokaido Shinkansen trains.

The Tokaido Shinkansen trains are inspected for both appearance and functionality every two days or less, and for the exterior in particular, inspectors walk on foot over the roof and under the floor of a 400-meter-long train.

The inspection system announced this time consists of a “visual inspection system” and a “pantograph grating inspection system.” In the former, cameras and sensors are installed at the entrances to train depots to automatically photograph the car body and under-floor equipment and detect any abnormalities. This system is capable of detecting even the slightest loosening of bolts with high accuracy.

In the latter case, an inspection device is installed directly above the station track to automatically measure the shape of the pantograph grating of incoming trains. Since the grating is subject to wear due to contact with the overhead wires while running, it is necessary to inspect the grating from time to time to ensure that the proper thickness is being maintained.

The visual inspection equipment will be installed at the Oi rail yard and the pantograph grating inspection equipment at Shinagawa Station in FY2024, and the specifications will be studied and verified using commercial trains. Full-scale operation is scheduled to begin around FY2029.
