JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO) Director General Sherm Suckle at JICA headquarters on May 27.
At the beginning of the meeting, Director General Suckle expressed his appreciation for the wide range of cooperation between JICA and ITTO, including the implementation of projects over the past 10 years based on the operational cooperation agreement with JICA and the co-sponsorship of events at international conferences.
In response, President Tanaka stated that ITTO and JICA would like to further strengthen cooperation and communication at important international conferences such as the 16th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) scheduled to be held in Yokohama next year, and the 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30). He expressed his hope that ITTO and JICA would further deepen their cooperation and strengthen their collaboration and dissemination at various international conferences in preparation for such important opportunities.
In addition, the participants exchanged views on the importance of taking indigenous peoples and gender into consideration in the promotion of conservation and utilization of tropical forests, and preparations for co-hosting a side event for TICAD 9.
