At the port, visitors can enjoy the “e-bike ride experience,” which is the main feature of this facility. This allows visitors to ride freely through the streets of Yokohama without a guide, and although it is limited to about 30 minutes, it is an easy way to get a feel for the appeal of e-bikes. The service is available at any time, but advance reservations are recommended as there may be a waiting period depending on the number of bikes available.
The e-bikes that can be experienced are the flagship YPJ-MT Pro and YPJ-XC Final Edition mountain bikes, the WABASH RT gravel bike that is comfortable on and off the bike, and the CROSSCORE RC that can be used for a wide range of activities from daily use to sports riding. There are a total of 30 bikes in all colors and sizes. A total of 30 units in all colors and sizes are available.
The other is the “eBike Yokohama Guided Tour,” which requires advance reservations. This is a 90-minute tour of the city of Yokohama with a guide. The tours are currently available on Saturdays, June 8, 15, 22, and 29, but if there are enough requests, the company will consider increasing the number of tours and the days of the week. Reservations can be made through the website, and reservations will be accepted from June 3.
The staff will select the models available for test rides based on height and other factors. Both the ride and guided tour are free of charge, but the age requirement is 16 or older, and those under 18 must have the consent of a parent or guardian.
In addition to exhibiting electric bikes, the lab offers hands-on rides in assist-type wheelchairs and full electric wheelchairs that use electrically power assisted bicycle technology. Visitors can also see the vehicle that was developed as the basis for the world’s first electrically power assisted bicycle, PAS.
A tea café is available in the lounge. The tea will be served with green tea produced in Mori-machi, Shuchi-gun, Shizuoka Prefecture, where the drive unit for electrically power assisted bicycles is manufactured, and mobility sablé made in collaboration with Shunkado, known for its eel pies, a specialty of Lake Hamana. Original goods will also be on sale.
The theater is equipped with a large 20 x 3.5m, 180-degree screen and Yamaha 7.2ch speakers. In addition to providing powerful images and sound, the theater can also be used as a multipurpose hall for meetings and workshops. Although details have not yet been finalized, live viewing of the Jubilo Iwata professional soccer team, which is also an official partner of the theater, is also envisioned.
Various events are planned to commemorate the opening. In particular, on June 6, 8, and 9, “Kankan Musume” corn, a specialty of Mori Town, will be given away to the first 500 visitors. The corn will be harvested at around 3:00 a.m. on the day of the event, and freshly picked in the morning, with a sugar content of 18 to 20 degrees Celsius, and which can be eaten raw, will be distributed.
