On May 29, Mitsui Fudosan and MIXI held a press briefing and unveiling event at LaLa arena TOKYO-BAY (2-5-15 Hamacho, Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture), a large multipurpose arena with a capacity of 10,000 people.
Located a six-minute walk from JR Minami-Funabashi Station, the arena is close to Mitsui Shopping Park Lala Terrace TOKYO-BAY, a commercial facility directly connected to JR Minami-Funabashi Station. Located a six-minute walk from JR Minami-Funabashi Station and close to Mitsui Shopping Park LaLa Terrace TOKYO-BAY, a commercial facility directly connected to the station, the facility provides an environment where visitors to the arena can enjoy a full day of dining and shopping.
The arena is a four-story building with a total floor area of approximately 31,000 m2 , consisting of four floors of spectator seating: arena seating on the first floor, stand seating on the second and fourth floors, and a VIP area on the third floor, which includes 19 VIP rooms with private dining rooms overlooking the arena, stand seating exclusively for VIP rooms, balcony seats with no glass walls for a more realistic experience, and a VIP lounge for fan interaction. The third floor is a VIP area with 19 VIP rooms, stand seats for VIP rooms, balcony seats with no glass walls for a more realistic experience, and a VIP lounge where fans can mingle with each other.
A 423-inch elevating center vision is suspended in the center of the arena, and a 120-meter-long ribbon vision is permanently installed around the arena, allowing for a variety of entertaining productions that make full use of video and music.
From the 2024-25 season, the arena will also be used as the home arena for the Chiba Jets Funabashi, a professional basketball team managed by MIXI and a member of the B League Division 1, and the backyard will be equipped with a locker room for the exclusive use of Chiba Jets players.
In addition to basketball, the system is designed for a variety of other uses, including sporting events such as soccer and figure skating, music concerts, and exhibitions.
The exterior design was inspired by the “port” of Lalaport, the commercial facility where Minami Funabashi is located, and the “jet plane” from which the Chiba Jets team name is derived. The perforated aluminum panels, which resemble the wake of a ship and jet airflow, express a sense of dynamism.
The distinctive mortar-shaped bowl design allows the audience to feel closer to the players and performers and to experience a sense of realism. The interior design is based on the theme of an “airport,” and is simple and beautiful, with an awareness of materiality and color.
In addition, a total of four food and beverage locations will be set up on the north and south sides of the second floor, where the main entrance is located. Depending on the event, a new collaboration menu may also be available. In addition, there will be a 720m2 “SUB ARENA” attached to the arena, which will be used as a practice field for competitions and as a space for selling goods during events.
The unveiling event, held to commemorate the opening of the arena, was attended by approximately 1,000 general visitors, including neighborhood residents, Mitsui Shopping Park point members, and Chiba Jets boosters. Shun Ueda, President and Representative Director of Mitsui Fudosan, and Hiroki Kimura, President and Representative Director of MIXI, made speeches on behalf of the organizers.
Also in attendance were Funabashi Mayor Toru Matsudo, Japan Basketball Association President Yuko Miya, and Japan Professional Basketball League Chairman Shinji Shimada.
Other special guests included Yuki Togashi of the Chiba Jets, Masama Uno, a professional figure skater, and Funashii, a pear fairy who lives in Funabashi City. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, cheerleaders’ performance, talk show, and free-throw duel by current players excited the audience.
Mr. Ueda, President and CEO of Mitsui Fudosan, opened his speech by saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, we are pleased to announce the opening of Lala Arena Tokyo Bay. The Mitsui Fudosan Group has long promoted the creation of an inspiring city that leverages the power of sports and entertainment. We hope to bring enthusiasm, excitement, and excitement to Minami-Funabashi, where we have been developing commercial facilities for over 40 years.
While the local team, the Chiba Jets, is a popular and powerful team that has ranked first in attendance for four consecutive seasons since the start of the B-League in 2016, they have had issues with the environment at their current home, Funabashi Arena, where many prospective spectators are unable to purchase tickets. With LaLa Arena Tokyo Bay as their new home, the number of spectators will nearly double.
MIXI President Kimura said, “We aim to create an arena that will become the new standard for watching basketball games. We want to produce an arena where players and spectators can become one and be excited by the fusion of software and hardware, the latest AR and other technologies we have cultivated through game development, and the entertainment value of the arena.
After the opening performance by Mr. Children, the most recent events are “THE ICE 2024 Tokyo Performance,” an ice show featuring Masama Uno and others on July 27-28, and “Disney on Ice “Find Your Gift” on September 21-23. ” and more are scheduled.
In addition, three commercial facilities in the Minami-Funabashi area (LaLaPort TOKYO-BAY, Vivit Minami-Funabashi, and LaLa Terrace TOKYO-BAY) are holding a campaign in which customers who spend 5,000 yen or more including tax can win tickets to see “THE ICE 2024 Tokyo Performance” and meal tickets by drawing.
