The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Record of Discussions (R/D) with the Western Africa Power Pool* on May 28 in Abome-Calabi-Benin on the technical cooperation project “Strengthening Regional Collaboration to Promote the Western Africa Power Pool. The Western Africa region covers an area of about 4.5 million square kilometers. The Western Africa region has a population of about 440 million, and Nigeria, Ghana, and Cote d’Ivoire are supporting the region’s electricity supply by supplying electricity to the region through the Western Africa Power Pool (WAPP). As demand for electricity in the region continues to grow, it is essential for WAPP to develop human resources and strengthen its capacity in order to achieve stable power supply over the long term through the full-scale operation of the wide-area grid and market. This project will contribute to the promotion of stable access to clean and affordable electricity in the Western African region by strengthening the capacity of electricity companies in 14 WAPP member countries to operate wide-area grids and electricity markets through the Western Africa Power Pool (WAPP), whose secretariat is located in Benin.
