On May 24, emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) were handed over to Papua New Guinea in response to landslide damage in the Enga Province of the country.

The first batch of emergency relief supplies arrived in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on Tuesday, June 4, and a handover ceremony was held at Jackson International Airport at 10:00 (local time) on the same day, attended by Mr. Raso Mana, Acting Director of the National Disaster Center, and Ms. Connie Samuel, Deputy Minister of National Planning and Monitoring from the Papua New Guinea side. The ceremony was attended by Mr. Nobuyuki Watanabe, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Papua New Guinea, and Mr. Hideaki Matsuoka, Director of JICA Papua New Guinea Office, from the Japanese side. At the ceremony, a certificate of receipt of emergency relief supplies was exchanged between Mr. Hideaki Matsuoka, JICA Papua New Guinea Office Director, and Mr. Raso Mana, Acting Director of the National Disaster Center.

At the handover ceremony, Mr. Mana, Director of the National Disaster Center, expressed his deep appreciation for Japan’s assistance, and Mr. Kony, Deputy Minister, stated that the prompt provision of emergency relief supplies from Japan was a sign of the strong solidarity between the two countries, and that the Papua New Guinea government would distribute them to the affected areas as soon as possible. In response, Ambassador Watanabe expressed his condolences to the victims of the earthquake and expressed his hope that the recovery from the damage will progress as soon as possible.

The second group is scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, June 5, and emergency relief supplies to be provided include tents, blankets, plastic sheeting, sleeping pads, polyethylene tanks, and water purifiers.

The relief supplies provided this time will be delivered to the affected areas by the National Disaster Center of Papua New Guinea in cooperation with international partners.
