Hyatt Hotels Corporation opened “Caption by Hyatt Namba Osaka” (2-7-5 Nihonbashi, Chuo-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture) on June 12, its third hotel in the world and first in Japan.
The hotel is located along Sakaisuji Street, not far from Namba, a major commercial district in Osaka’s Minami district. With 11 floors above ground and a total of 167 rooms, the hotel will offer seven types of rooms in two classes: standard rooms and deluxe rooms.
The hotel will not have a “lobby,” the so-called face of a hotel, but instead will have a “talk store,” a food and beverage, event, and community facility that can be used by non-guests as the core of the hotel, aiming to operate the hotel in a locally-oriented manner.
The hotel’s core facility, “Talk Shop,” is a community space based on the concept of a place where local residents and guests can connect and meet, where guests are treated to a variety of events as well as food and beverages.
There will be 100 seats available, and the restaurant will be open from 7:00 to 23 hours. The café menu, which is open to non-guests, will feature ingredients from the nearby Kuromon Market and seasonal Osaka ingredients, as well as a variety of soul foods representative of Osaka, such as takoyaki and kushikatsu (skewered pork cutlets). Alcoholic beverages are also available, offering a new dining experience any time during business hours.
The hotel is also planning a variety of hands-on events, including “caption takopa,” a takoyaki-making experience taught by artisans from the long-established takoyaki restaurant “Takoyaki Doraku Wakana” in Sennichimae, Osaka, and workshops by artisans from a kitchen knife store that has been in the Sennichimae Doguyasuji shopping street for 70 years. Details of the events are scheduled to be posted on the hotel’s official Instagram (@captionbyhyattnambaosaka).
As mentioned above, there will be 161 standard rooms (20 m2) and 6 deluxe rooms (30 m2) in two classes, with 5 types of standard rooms: queen, twin, city view queen, city view twin, and accessible queen. Deluxe rooms will be available in two types: Deluxe City View King and Deluxe Twin.
The interior is playfully decorated with Osaka-inspired artwork, created by internationally acclaimed Kyoto-born artist ZAnPon.
In addition, the hotel has a 24-hour fitness center and laundry facilities, making it suitable for both short-term and long-term stays.
This “Caption by Hyatt” is the newest of Hyatt’s hotel brands and will be announced in 2019, with the first store opening in Memphis, U.S. in June 2022, the second store opening in Shanghai, China in April 2024, and the “Caption by Hyatt Namba” This will be the third Hyatt Namba in the world. This is a new concept among the many Hyatt brands, and is positioned as a select-service lifestyle hotel with close ties to the local community.
The company plans to open in Kabuto-cho, Tokyo in 2025, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Sydney, Australia, among others, although the timing has not yet been determined.
Mr. Masahiko Sakamura, President of Hyatt Japan, who made a speech before the opening, said, “Osaka has a long history of flourishing as a center of commerce, culture, and other diverse elements since the Edo period. The city is full of vitality and energy, making it one of the most special cities in Japan. Namba, in particular, is one of the best downtown areas in Japan. A place where traditional culture and trends mix and create a chemical reaction. We chose this location because we believe the brand concept that the hotel is aiming for can be realized here. We sincerely hope to create a comfortable space where guests can discover a unique experience.
