Although more and more people are using SNS to gather information about their travel destinations, even in this day and age, we are still interested in the recommendations of local people. In this section, we ask people who work at lodging facilities throughout Japan to introduce points of interest at the lodging facilities where they work and their favorite sightseeing spots in the surrounding area.
For this interview, we spoke with Katsuhiro Konno, general manager of the Akiu Grand Hotel in Akiu Onsen.
Name: Akiu Grand Hotel, Akiu Onsen
Location: 12-2 Biwabara, Yumoto, Akiu-cho, Taihaku-ku, Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture
–Please give us an overview of the facility.
Located in the western part of Sendai City, about 30 minutes by car from Sendai Station, Akiu Onsen is home to many scenic spots that can be called a treasure house of nature, and the sounds and sights of the Lei Gorge, where the Natori River flows in front of you and erodes strange rocks, will soothe your soul. The hotel offers infinity baths that feel as if they are one with the scenic Leiyo Gorge, a buffet featuring about 50 stylish dishes including Sendai specialties, Japanese, Western, and Chinese, a ninja house, and collaborative events, making your stay an entertainment experience in itself.
–What are some of the highlights or experiences that you would like to see or experience that you can’t find anywhere else?
A wide variety of events are offered to keep guests entertained. We have a “Ninja House” during the summer vacation, where children can enjoy solving riddles, a “Lycos” cosplay event where various locations not normally open to the public are opened for photography in addition to the hotel’s unique location, and an annual bingo tournament where a comedian sometimes serves as the host. We have prepared a variety of activities for you to enjoy your stay to the fullest.
–What are your personal recommendations for nearby attractions?
There are many popular spots, such as “Akiu Great Falls,” which is a national scenic beauty spot and one of the three best waterfalls in Japan (about 20 minutes by car from the hotel), “Saichi,” a local supermarket with a long line of customers whose delicious rice balls have been repeatedly featured in the media, and “Akiu Shrine,” dedicated to the god of victory and visited by gold medalist Hanyu in his playing days. There are a variety of popular spots, but my personal favorite is the Akiu Grand Hotel “Momiji-jo,” with its seasonal nature and castle-like appearance.
–Finally, any last words for our readers?
As we often use in our catchphrase, you can feel the “luxury of being right there” at the Akiu Grand Hotel. Although it is only 30 minutes from Sendai, you can feel the great outdoors and enjoy a buffet where you can have as much as you like at a reasonable price. We are sure that you will enjoy your stay to the fullest, so “Please come to the Akiu Grand Hotel once!
