On June 24, Weathernews released its Extreme Heat View 2024.
This year, a heat wave is expected mainly in the inland areas of Honshu, with temperatures nationwide expected to be higher than normal and on par with last year, and the heat is expected to peak in late July and early August. In addition, the rainy season is expected to end in the Tohoku region by mid-July.
The heat in late July and early August is due to active convection near the Philippines and the strengthening of the Pacific High near Honshu, and if the Tibetan High develops at the same time, the two highs will overlap in the sky and may cause severe heat. In this case, there will be cases of extremely hot days of 35°C or more, and in inland areas where sea breezes do not penetrate easily, the temperature may reach around 40°C.
We also see the possibility of a La Niña event occurring during the summer and fall. When a La Niña event occurs, the Pacific High is expected to strengthen due to the effect of enhanced convective activity in the seas around the Philippines, and the area around Japan is likely to be covered by warm air even in September, resulting in higher-than-normal temperatures.
