ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo” Janssen’s recommendation

Posted on 2024-06-252024-09-04 by Editor in Chief

IHG Hotels & Resorts operates 19 hotel brands with more than 6,300 hotels in over 100 countries. In Japan, IHG Hotels & Resorts currently operates approximately 47 hotels under seven brands from Hokkaido to Okinawa (as of March 2024). For this interview, we asked Mr. Michael Janssen, General Manager of ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo, about the attractions around the hotel.

Name: ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo

Location: 1-12-33 Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo

–How did you come to work at the ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo?

I am originally from Germany and have worked for “IHG Hotels & Resorts” for more than 25 years in all major regions of Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia. In recent years, I have served as General Manager of luxury resorts in Thailand, especially in the resort areas of Hua Hin and Koh Samui, before assuming the position of General Manager and Portfolio General Manager of the “ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo” in June 2023. He will continue to renovate the hotel to enhance its position in the luxury hotel market in Tokyo.

–What kind of hotel is it?

The ANA InterContinental Hotel Tokyo is located in the heart of Tokyo, within walking distance of Akasaka, Roppongi, and Kasumigaseki, and is one of the largest city hotels in Tokyo, with 37 floors above ground and 844 rooms in total. The hotel is highly regarded for its location, and is also characterized by a high percentage of international guests, both business and leisure travelers. In addition, the hotel offers a wide variety of culinary experiences with 12 excellent restaurants and bars.

We are currently undergoing a large-scale “Luxury Room Renovation” project that will take 15 months to renovate 759 of our 844 total guest rooms, and we are welcoming guests into their new rooms from the floors that have been renovated in sequence. The project is scheduled to be completed in December 2024, bringing the total number of renovated rooms to 801.

Located on the 35th floor, the Club InterContinental is one of the largest lounges in Japan (approximately 600 m2) and offers the best views of the Imperial Palace and Mount Fuji in central Tokyo. From check-in and check-out to breakfast, afternoon tea, and cocktail hour, our dedicated staff will provide attentive service and make you feel at home. In the future, we plan to increase the number of Club Rooms and Club Suites and expand the “Club InterContinental” lounge.

The hotel also has an outdoor swimming pool, which is relatively large for a Tokyo hotel, and will be open for the summer season from June 15 to September 30, 2024. Surrounded by greenery, this “urban oasis” is enjoyed by many guests every year.

–please let me know if you have any personal favorites tourist spots or restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel.

I enjoy exploring new places, and I especially like the Azabudai Hills and Toranomon Hills, which have unique concepts around the hotel. The indoor and outdoor restaurants and cafes offer wonderful dining experiences unique to the city center, and the many plazas and green spaces on the grounds are an attractive place to relax. It is always refreshing to find the latest spots that bring the cityscape to life.

–What restaurant menu do you recommend?

One restaurant we recommend is Brewers Coffee & Bar on the third floor of the hotel, which opened in August 2023 and combines elements of a coffee specialty store and a bar, offering a relaxed atmosphere and an extensive menu. The restaurant has just added a number of new food items to its menu in the past month, including nourish bowls and meatball sandwiches. We hope you will visit us soon.

–What souvenirs do you recommend?

Pierre Gagnaire Pains et Gateaux (2FL.), a patisserie specialty store, sells artistic cakes, breads and baked goods made from the same recipes as those used in Parisian restaurants. In addition to a wide variety of products overflowing with French esprit, the shop also offers seasonally themed products such as strawberries, green tea, and chocolate for a limited time only, which we are sure will make great souvenirs.
