JTB, Outlook for Summer Vacation Overnight Travel. Domestic Travelers and Spending Down Slightly from Previous Year?

Posted on 2024-07-052024-09-04 by Editor in Chief

JTB has released its travel trend forecast for “those who will travel for one night or more during summer vacation (July 15-August 31, 2024). The main points are described here.

In domestic travel, the number of travelers is forecast to decrease slightly to 68 million, 95.8% of the previous year’s level, and the amount of travel spending to 2,856 billion yen, 95.8% of the previous year’s level. As factors, the report cites a calming down of the appetite for travel after the Corona disaster and uncertainty about the future of people’s lives as reasons for the decline.

Meanwhile, for overseas travel, the number of travelers is projected at 1.75 million, up 101.2% from the previous year, and travel spending at 418.3 billion yen, up 104.7% from the previous year. This increase is attributed to the weaker yen, higher prices, and the trend toward longer trips and longer distances.

Regarding travel intentions, 34.1% of respondents said they would travel, a decrease of 2.4 points from the previous year and a turnaround from the annual increase since 2022. The most common reason given for not traveling was “It will be crowded during the summer vacation period” (30.4%).

Of the respondents who traveled, 17.7% answered that they would “increase the number of days of travel compared to last year’s summer vacation,” far exceeding the percentage who answered they would “decrease,” but the number of respondents who would “increase” decreased while those who would “decrease” increased, indicating a tendency to shorten the number of days. A similar contrasting structure was observed between those who “want to travel farther away” and those who “want to travel closer to home,” indicating a tendency for travel to be shorter distances.
