The Japan Association of Private Railway Companies and 21 other companies and bureaus, including JR passenger companies, announced the number and occurrence of violent acts against railroad staff in fiscal year 2023.
There were 517 acts of violence in 37 company stations, down slightly from 543 in FY2022, but still above 500. The number of incidents was higher on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays by day of the week, and at night and late at night by time of day, and 54% of the perpetrators were under the influence of alcohol, indicating a link between violent acts and alcohol consumption, as in the previous year.
