OpenStreet, which operates the “HELLO CYCLING” shared cycle platform, has launched a pilot project for a sharing service for “electric bicycles,” which can be ridden sitting down like a bicycle, in the Senboku New Town area of Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.
The “electric bicycles” are seated, have a low center of gravity, and are stable enough to allow the rider to rest his or her weight on the seat, thus allowing the rider to ride with the same feeling of control as a bicycle. While violations and accidents involving electric kickboards are on the rise, the Electric Cycle has had no traffic arrests or traffic accidents since the service began.
The new system will be introduced in the Senboku New Town area, which is a priority area under the Sakai Smart City Strategy, which aims to improve the quality of life for citizens and solve regional issues. The existing 12 stations where electrically power assisted bicycles can be used will be equipped with additional racks to accommodate electric bicycles. In addition, six other stations will be installed at public facilities, for a total of 18 stations with 50 electric bicycles.
