Showa Retro Onsen Sento Tamagawa Onsen (3700 Tamagawa, Tokigawa-cho, Hiki-gun, Saitama Prefecture), a day spa operated by Onsen Dojo, will install “icicles” in the building only on extremely hot days of 35°C or higher after the rainy season.
Following the example of the Showa period (1926-1989), when air conditioners were not widely available, ice poles were used to make hot days a little more comfortable, and during the summer months, the restaurant offers visitors the chance to cool their eyes.
In the open-air baths, “insensitive temperature bathing,” in which the water is about the same temperature as the body, allows visitors to enjoy the hot spring for a longer period of time without putting a strain on their bodies. Cool shampoo and cool body soap will be available in the bathrooms until August 3.
Tamagawa Onsen is an alkaline simple hot spring (pH 10) that gushes out from 1,700 meters underground and is characterized by its smooth texture. Located in a peaceful satoyama in the town of Tokigawa, visitors can enjoy an atmosphere as if they have stepped back in time to the Showa Era (1926-1989).
