The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Grant Agreement (G/A) with the government of the Republic of Senegal on July 19 in Dakar, the capital of the country, for a grant of up to 3,724 million yen for the “Thiès State Core Hospital Expansion Project.
In Senegal, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases have been increasing in recent years. Early detection and treatment of NCDs is also important in the fight against infectious diseases, including novel coronavirus infection, making the expansion of diagnostic and treatment systems for NCDs an urgent issue. The Regional Core Hospital of Thiess is the top referral hospital in the state and accepts many patients with NCDs. However, the lack of and aging medical equipment necessary for diagnosis and treatment of NCDs and the complicated flow of patients and medical personnel through the hospital, which is divided into separate wards for each department, have reduced the efficiency of medical care and made it difficult to provide appropriate medical services. This makes it difficult to provide appropriate medical services.
This project will contribute to the achievement of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as set forth by the Senegalese government by building a new specialized outpatient ward and an MRI ward to enable advanced treatment of NCDs at the regional core hospital in Thiès, as well as improving the hospital’s capacity to receive patients by providing the equipment necessary for diagnosis and treatment. The project will contribute to SDG Goal 3 (health and wellbeing for all).
