Related Article The purpose of the “[High School Teachers] Hawaii Study Tour Project for Planning Inquiry-based Overseas Training” is to provide an opportunity for teachers who are trying to improve the quality of “overseas educational training” and establish “inquiry-based learning” classes at high schools throughout Japan to visit Hawaii. The project aims to provide an opportunity for teachers who want to improve the quality of “overseas educational training” and establish new “inquiry-based learning” classes in high schools across Japan to visit Hawaii. The theme of the program is “Teachers produce their own inquiry-based overseas training programs with high learning effects that are appropriate for the times. In addition to providing scholarship support for students who apply individually and are motivated to learn globally, the program also encourages schools nationwide to follow up with students who are interested in going abroad but are unable to find the opportunity due to their learning environment or financial circumstances, and to rekindle and facilitate overseas educational training, which has been discontinued by an increasing number of schools after the Corona disaster. The program will also encourage schools nationwide to follow up on students who have been unable to find an opportunity to go abroad due to the economic situation. In other words, the project is “sowing the seeds” of foreign students for the production of global human resources. Teachers themselves go to the destination and find partners who are willing to cooperate with the students’ exploration activities (e.g., schools, museums, farms, nature conservation volunteer groups, local guides, restaurants and hotels that are available for groups and fit their budgets, and, of course, fun tourist spots), Establish trust beforehand. The aim is to help students pick up ideas for plans, transportation, and points of interest that are difficult to obtain from online or internet information alone. Overseas educational training is a school event for a small number of students (5-20) with a short-term, intensive schedule of about one week, and is designed to promote cross-cultural exchange, experience nature, and learn about peace. It is different from so-called “school excursions. The “time for integrated inquiry (inquiry-based learning)” is a learning method based on the new Courses of Study, in which students formulate their own questions to be solved, formulate hypotheses to solve them, and investigate and analyze them in the field while cooperating and exchanging opinions with their peers to derive the answers. This method of learning fosters the skills required in society (i.e., the ability to live). Following elementary and junior high schools, the project started in 2022 for senior high schools. In April 2024, applications for the project were solicited through prefectural boards of education and other organizations, and 79 schools expressed interest in participating. After screening the applications and conducting interviews, 22 teachers from 22 schools were selected, a significant increase from the originally planned number of about 10 schools. In late July, when many schools were on summer break, the first tour (12 teachers from 12 schools) was held, and in December, the second tour (10 teachers from 10 schools) will be held on the same 5-day/3-night schedule. Although there has been some complicated talk up to this point, the underlying theme of this report is “the charm and depth of Hawaii, which is more than just resorts. Needless to say, relaxing in Hawaii is great, but it is not enough! Or, if you are going to spend a lot of money on a trip, you want to make it a rewarding one! We would be happy to provide some hints for those who want to make the most of their trip. Or, if you are an adult and want to make the most of your trip, I would be happy to give you some tips on how to make the most of your time in Hawaii.
