Zenkoji Temple is a single, non-denominational Buddhist temple located in Motozen-cho, Nagano City, Nagano Prefecture. Since the temple has existed since before Buddhism was divided into sects, it is said to be a sacred place where people of all sects can make a pilgrimage. Most people have probably heard of Zenkoji Temple, which is famous for its 1,400-year history and many legends and stories, including the famous story “Hiked by a bull to Zenkoji Temple,” and for the blessing of a trip to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss if one visits the temple at least once in one’s life.
The vast temple grounds cover an area of 59,000 m2, and the main hall is a national treasure and the gate, an important cultural property, is a joy to see. Even if you get tired, you can take a rest at a sweet store or soba noodle shop along the approach to the temple. The approach shopping street has many stores, including souvenir shops, which are fun to see and enjoy.
To get there, there is a bus from JR Nagano Station to Zenkoji Temple, which takes about 15 minutes. If you are driving, parking is convenient as there are parking lots around Zenkoji Temple, but it is sometimes difficult to get close to the temple during high season due to traffic congestion.
When the Gokaicho is held once every seven years, the gilt-bronze Amida Nyorai and the two side-arm standing statues (the front-standing principal image) are displayed to the public as alter egos of the principal image, which is an absolutely secret statue of Buddha, and many people visit. The next time is in 2027 or 2028, so check the website and go see it.
