Kawasaki City to test automated route buses in January 2025. Two routes from Daishi-bashi Station to Tenkubashi Station/Kawasaki Station to Kawasaki City Hospital

Posted on 2024-08-052024-09-27 by Editor in Chief

On August 2, Kawasaki City announced the route and timing of a demonstration experiment for a route bus using automated driving technology.

The company will conduct a test run of Level 2 automated driving using automated EV buses from around January 13, 2025, and a 10-day demonstration run from around January 27, 2025, during which the general public will be able to ride in the buses, aiming for Level 4 implementation in FY2027.

There are two routes: the Daishi Station-Tenkubashi Station Haneda Liaison Line running along the Tamagawa Sky Bridge, and the Kawasaki Hospital Line running between Kawasaki Station and Kawasaki Municipal Hospital, which is used by 300,000 passengers per day.

The automated driving system achieves a maximum speed of 35 km/h during automated driving by linking high-precision 3D map information, sensor technology, and signal information. The bus fleet is the latest EV vehicle (Tiafoe’s Minibus v2.0) with high battery performance.

The Haneda Liaison Route runs through Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Ota Ward, Tokyo, making it the first effort in Japan to implement Level 4 automated driving on a bus route that straddles two municipalities or areas.

Kawasaki City says it aims to achieve a decarbonized society by 2050 by using electricity derived from renewable energy sources for its EV self-driving buses.
