Background and Objectives
The SDG QUEST Mirai Koshien was launched in 2019 as a forum for high school students to present and exchange SDG action ideas. JICA has been involved in the Mirai Koshien as a supporting organization and executive committee member, and in 2023, JICA was also involved in the management of the event as a co-sponsor of the Tokyo event. In addition to these activities, JICA was also involved in the management of the Tokyo event as a co-sponsor.
In hopes of further increasing interest in the SDGs, JICA and international cooperation among young people, especially high school students, we have established the “Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Award” and decided to offer a “JICA Yokohama Tour” to the winning team. The “Daisy Days for Kenya” team from Tokyo Gakugei University International Secondary School and volunteers from the Volunteer Department visited JICA Yokohama Center. They had a discussion with JICA staff members and toured the JICA Yokohama Center and the Overseas Migration Information Center.

Daisy Days for Kenya” (Plan name: Righteous assistance to distant countries through the purchase of goods), an international secondary school attached to Tokyo Gakugei University, was selected for the JICA Award. The company is working to improve the problems of street children in Kenya by making and selling products made of African fabrics and donating at least half of the proceeds to JICA overseas cooperation volunteers. All products have a tag attached to them explaining the current situation of street children, creating an opportunity to inform many people about the current situation and issues in Kenya.
In the opinion exchange with JICA staff, the participants were divided into two teams and had a lively discussion on the theme of “Sustainability of the school’s support for children in Kenya,” including concrete measures for better development of the activities in the future. In the summary of the exchange of opinions, the following presentations were made: “I could understand JICA’s projects and support to developing countries in concrete terms, and I thought that I would like to be involved in international cooperation in the future,” and “The JICA staff listened to my concerns about the impact and sustainability of the Kenyan child support project currently being implemented, and gave me advice, which helped me to clarify my concerns. The JICA staff listened to my concerns about the impact and sustainability of my current project to support children in Kenya and gave me advice that helped me to clarify my concerns.
We hope that the students will take the experience of the Mirai Koshien and the opportunity of this event into the future, and JICA supports the school’s future activities.
