After arriving at Honolulu Airport, you will pass through immigration and go sightseeing in the city while rubbing your sleepy eyes. If you are visiting Hawaii for the first time, you will want to enjoy the time before checking in to your hotel. You can enjoy the sights you see and photograph, such as Chinatown, Iolani Palace, the King Kamehameha Statue, Kakaako Wall Art, and Magic Island, simply by taking a 2- to 3-hour car tour around the city and stopping occasionally to take pictures. Arriving in Honolulu in the morning will give us more time to check in, so I have a feeling that we will have a full day. The first thing that struck me at the beginning of the trip was the Iolani Palace. It is a very valuable place, the only building that used to be a palace existing in the U.S. It was built by King Kalakaua in 1882, when Hawaii was still a kingdom. The palace was built using the latest technology of the time, and the interior was equipped with flush toilets, hot showers, telephones, and electric lights, which were rare in those days. The palace was used as a political center until Hawaii became a U.S. state. Some of the furniture and interior furnishings from those days still remain, and the building is open to the public as a historical landmark that conveys the history and culture of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Visitors who wish to enter the museum must join a tour, which is available on limited days, so it is recommended to make reservations online in advance. The price is $26.95 for adults for a tour with a Japanese audio guide, $32.95 for adults for a tour with a Japanese-speaking guide, and $77.95 for adults for a specialty tour in Japanese. The next area we visited was the Kakaako district, a rapidly growing area that is undergoing rapid redevelopment. Kakaako is home to fashionable cafes, stores, and Hawaiian microbreweries, and can be considered the trend-setting area of Hawaii. Kakaako is especially famous for its wall art, which has been posted on many social networking sites, and walking around the area offers visitors a pop culture experience that cannot be found in Japan. Visitors to Hawaii should not miss the opportunity to spend time in the clear, bright ocean. Oahu is surrounded by the ocean, and each beach has a different look and feel. One of the most expansive is Ala Moana Beach Park. When many people hear the word “Ala Moana,” a shopping mall probably comes to mind. Ala Moana Beach Park is popular among locals, and the gentle waves make it an easy beach for even small children to enjoy. Magic Island, a populated peninsula in Ala Moana Beach Park, is a popular spot for picnics and barbecues during the day and beautiful sunsets in the evening. It is also a very popular wedding photo spot, and on this day, couples were enjoying taking photos. On Magic Island, you can also watch the fireworks display from the Hilton every Friday night. Ala Moana Beach is a great place to take romantic photos while enjoying the view of Diamond Head and the sunset. Lunch time at an open-air restaurant and feel the breeze of Hawaii The Kahala Hotel & Resort is known as one of the most prestigious hotels in Hawaii. For my first lunch in Hawaii, I visited the open-air “Plumeria Beach House” in the hotel. This restaurant offers a unique dining experience at a luxury hotel while overlooking the ocean. The restaurant offers both indoor and terrace seating, and fresh cuisine can be enjoyed from breakfast to dinner. The restaurant is committed to local production for local consumption, serving dishes made with ingredients grown in Hawaii. The burger I had for lunch was a generous portion, as one would expect from a restaurant in Hawaii. However, as I was enjoying the juicy, meaty patty and the slightly sweet vegetables, I was finished before I knew it. The view from the restaurant and the delicious food are appealing, but if you have time to spare, you should also take a walk around the hotel. Just past the beach leading from the terrace of the restaurant, you will see a number of large shadows in the 2,400 m2 lagoon. They are the Atlantic bottlenose dolphins that you can see in the hotel. You can even swim with and touch these dolphins by participating in the “Dolphin Quest” program. Depending on your itinerary, it may be difficult to take a boat tour to look for wild dolphins, but this hotel is only about a 15-minute drive from Waikiki, so you may be able to fit it into your schedule if you have a lot to do on your first visit to Hawaii!
