Feel the history and mystery of Hawaii at a famous spot rich in nature Having enjoyed the sights, beaches, and hula shows of Hawaii on the first day, I became even more interested in the history and culture of Hawaii and the lifestyle of the people who live there. So on the morning of our second day in Hawaii, we went to Nuuanu Pali Lookout (lookout), a mysterious spot filled with Hawaii’s history. It is a 30-minute drive from Waikiki and you will need to rent a car or take a cab, but it is a place where you can feel the mystery of Hawaii with your whole body, and that is reason enough to visit. Let me briefly explain about Nuuanu Pali. Nuuanu Pali was the site of the decisive battle that led to the unification of Hawaii by King Kamehameha I. The landing of Kamehameha I’s forces in Waikiki in 1975 marked the beginning of the Battle of Oahu. Kamehameha I landed from Waikiki, and then proceeded to attack farther and farther north. The Oahu army, led by Maui’s Kalanikupule, who had been defeated by Maui’s army ten years earlier, was finally driven back to Nuuanu Pali. Kamehameha’s army took over it despite cannon fire by Oahu’s army from the top of the cliff, and finally won the battle. Nuuanu” and “Pali” mean “cool plateau” and “cliff” in Hawaiian, respectively. As the names suggest, the closer we got to the observatory, the more foggy it became. The higher we climbed toward the 90-meter-high observatory, the stronger the wind blew and the trees swayed, creating a majestic atmosphere. Unfortunately, it was raining that day, and the sky showed no sign of brightening when we arrived at the observatory parking lot. However, the moment I got out of the car, thinking that it would be difficult to see the beautiful view of Hawaii (……), I realized that I had just been hit hard on the ground. The sound that had been pounding violently on the ground earlier ceased, and a strong wind blew so hard that I almost closed my eyes. A glimpse of blue sky appeared in the distance, and the view of Kailua Town and the ocean opened up. The golf course was clearly visible just below the cliffs, which were so steep they were almost vertical. Underneath the earth on which I was standing, thousands of Oahu military personnel who had fallen from the cliffs were sleeping. Even now, when construction and searches are conducted in this area, traces of their presence can be found. Thinking of this, I couldn’t help but think of the ethereal event that had lifted the rain the moment I stepped onto the observation deck.
Windward, an area of life and nature where time flows slowly. Windward is located on the east side of Oahu. It is a very different place from Waikiki, where everything is bustling with activity, but time flows at a more leisurely pace. Kailua Town is known as one of the most popular places for celebrities to visit, and is home to many cafes and restaurants with a great atmosphere. The people who live in this upscale area visit Whole Foods Market, an organic supermarket, on a daily basis. Whole Foods Market sells healthy and safe organic and local foods, such as organic vegetables and fruits, carefully selected meats and seafood, and dairy products. The Kailua store we visited this time has an eat-in space where customers can purchase prepared foods and coffee and take a break. The shop seems to be popular among tourists, and has a lineup of original goods such as tote bags and mugs. With the weak yen, many travelers may be thinking of …… to save as much money as possible on travel expenses. In such cases, it is advisable to procure souvenirs for dispersion at supermarkets. Even in high-end supermarkets such as Whole Foods Market, you can find bags of cookies for less than 1,000 Japanese yen. Soaps with unique designs, which are hard to find in Japan, would also make great souvenirs. Tropical fruits such as mangoes and papayas can be purchased very inexpensively, but since most of them cannot be brought into Japan, they are best enjoyed as breakfast or a snack during your stay. In Windward, Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000-acre nature preserve and ranch where visitors can experience activities and attractions such as horseback riding, ATVs, movie location tours, and zip-lining. In fact, Kualoa Ranch is also known as the filming location for the movies “Jurassic Park” and “Godzilla. Many of you may have seen it in Hollywood movies or foreign dramas with scenes of the great outdoors. On Kualoa Ranch’s movie location tours, visitors can experience as if they have entered the world of the film by visiting the actual locations. For movie buffs who want to experience more of the world, the longer 2.5-hour Jurassic Adventure Tour is also a great option, featuring the iconic 11-meter-high Indominus Rex cage, the actual dinosaur cage used in filming, and the iconic fallen tree, one of the most iconic spots in the Jurassic series. Visitors can take the time to explore the film’s setting in a leisurely and luxurious way. These movie tours are mainly conducted by custom jeep or bus, stopping at various points for photo ops, so you can still enjoy yourself after a long day of shopping and activities. Of course, horseback riding and marine activities are also recommended. Kualoa Ranch is said to be so vast that even the people who work there have not yet fully explored it. Once you have had an adventure, you will want to come back again.
