Africa’s demographic composition is particularly youthful, with a median age of 19.7 years in 2020, much younger than North America’s 38.6 years and Europe’s 42.5 years. This vibrant youth population is seen as an important driver of social progress and change. the UN’s 2030 Agenda, adopted in 2015, emphasizes the value of youth leadership and diverse talents in shaping a better future. the UN Future, to be held on September 22-23, 2024 Summit will adopt a “Pact for the Future” that includes a youth and future generations theme. The Summit will be a pivotal opportunity to integrate youth perspectives and innovative ideas to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Similarly, through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Japan has been actively involved in helping Africa achieve prosperity, resilient societies, and cooperation for peace and stability. As the need for youth engagement grows, the African Diaspora Network Japan (ADNJ) and Africa Asia Youth Nest (AAYN) are using this platform, which has been in existence for over 30 years, to give voice to the key architects of the future: the youth. With support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Volunteer Programme (UNV), and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), these organizations are developing policy recommendations and action plans to strengthen connections, empower, and foster collaborative partnerships between African and Japanese youth.

This thematic session will emphasize the role of youth as catalysts for change. Collectively, it will be based on a Future Design Workshop in which Japanese and African youth will participate and envision the future they want to see. This will provide a platform for intergenerational dialogue and contribute to the development of policy recommendations and action plans for TICAD 9. And together with senior representatives from academia, the private sector, the entrepreneurial community, and community-based organizations, it will facilitate constructive exchanges between Japanese and African youth.
