summary

On August 19, a pitch event for “Mongolia Open Innovation and Co-Creation for SDGs (MICS) 2024” (“MICS”) was held at the “Japan-Mongolia International Business Forum 2024” in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. MICS is a program that supports a wide range of stakeholders in industry, government, and academia in Japan and Mongolia to bring together technologies, ideas, and funds to co-create innovative solutions and work together to solve social issues and achieve the SDGs in Japan and Mongolia, The program will begin in 2023.

This year, MICS first held a kick-off event in Ulaanbaatar on June 11. Forty-two organizations selected from among the applicants exhibited booths, and 65 organizations, including 11 organizations from Japan and Mongolia’s rural areas, presented their ideas for achieving the SDGs and solving social issues through online presentations. Through the event, booth exhibitors, online participants, and 210 participants in attendance discussed co-creation of innovative solutions and collaboration. 43 collaborative project proposals were submitted one week later, and 15 collaborative projects were selected as a result of the document screening (first screening).

The 15 selected collaborative project teams traveled to Japan from August 3 to August 9, and on August 5, they made a pitch at MICS2024 in Tokyo held at JICA headquarters (Ichigaya) to invite Japanese participation and cooperation in collaborative projects. Approximately 40 Mongolian and 100 Japanese participants gathered at the event to exchange opinions and network. During their stay in Japan, the participants also visited Shibuya Start up Support, the Regional Industry Promotion Division of the Regional Development Department of Shinagawa Ward, the Shinagawa Industrial Support and Interchange Facility (SHIP), and other related organizations to meet with project members in Japan.

On August 19, at the “Japan-Mongolia International Business Forum 2024” held in Ulaanbaatar (hosted by JICA, Ulaanbaatar Science, Industry and Innovation Department, Mongolia-Japan Human Resources Development Center, Mongolian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Association of Returned Japanese Students), pitches were made in front of about 500 participants (about 100 from Japan and 400 from Mongolia). As a result of the screening process, 10 collaborative projects were selected, and three collaborative projects were awarded grants from the Ulaanbaatar Science, Industry, and Innovation Department.

JICA will continue to support the 10 selected collaborative projects through February 2025 by providing mentoring and partial subsidies for travel expenses between Japan and Mongolia. In addition, JICA and its sponsors will announce the collaborative projects for which JICA will provide partial support for implementation costs at an interim event to be held in mid-November (also as part of the local program of the Mongolia Business Study Tour to be conducted by the JICA Kyushu Center and Chugoku Center).
