JICA held meetings and events with country representatives in conjunction with the Ministerial Meeting of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) held in Tokyo on August 24-25.

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with ministers from a total of 16 African countries participating in the TICAD Ministerial Meeting to discuss issues in each country, JICA’s initiatives, and future cooperation in preparation for TICAD 9 to be held next August. Directors Naoki Ando, Kenichi Kawamura, and Shohei Hara also met with a total of 23 ministers and executives of international organizations (see below for a list of those interviewed by President Tanaka).

On the morning of Sunday, August 25, JICA co-hosted a session on trade and investment promotion with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and others at the plenary session of the Ministerial Meeting.
JICA President Akihiko Tanaka gave closing remarks for the first part of the session, and Naonobu Fuwa, an expert in entrepreneurship support at the Nigerian Government’s Digital Innovation Bureau, participated in a panel discussion on the theme of creating a sustainable business environment. In the networking session in the latter half of the session, we were joined by CourieMate, andu amet, and SOIK, all of which are currently doing business in Africa under JICA’s SME/SDGs business support program, as well as African startups such as Emergency Response Africa, Xolani Health, and Zowasel also participated in the event, networking with ministers and participating companies.

In parallel with the TICAD Ministerial Meeting, JICA held two events to raise the interest of the younger generation in Japan and Africa in Africa and to give voice to the younger generation.
(1) “Mock African Union Conference: Youth Solutions for a Greener Africa”

Description: In anticipation of TICAD 9 to be held in Yokohama in 2025, a mock African Union conference was held for the first time in Japan to encourage young people to think proactively about sustainable development and partnerships among African countries. University students from Japan and Africa acted as teams of representatives of African countries and discussed climate change and the realization of a green economy in Africa from the standpoint of their respective countries.

(2) “Africa-Japan Youth Drive: Co-creating the Future We Want”

Content: Young leaders and middle and senior generations in Japan and Africa were invited as speakers to discuss the potential and ideal future of “youth” in Japan and Africa JICA emphasized that youth is a driving force for social change and that co-creation between Japan and Africa, between young and senior generations, between the public and private sectors, etc. is also an opportunity for co-creation, JICA emphasized that young people are a driving force for social change, and that co-creation between Japan and Africa, between the younger generation and the older generation, and between the public and the private sector will also be a force for social change. In addition, Africa Asia Youth Nest (AAYN)/African Diaspora Network Japan (ADNJ), consisting of young people from Africa and Japan, expressed their intention to make “policy proposals from youth” for TICAD 9.
Panel Discussion
Since the first Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD I) held in 1993, JICA has developed projects based on the direction of African development discussed and agreed upon at TICAD, and has contributed to the discussions and action plans at TICAD through various discussions and dialogues with the Japanese government, African countries, international organizations, private companies and civil society.
