From August 19 to 21, “Mongolia Innovation Mission” was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, hosted by JETRO and co-hosted by JICA, JAXA and MOJC. The mission was a follow-up to the Business IT Mission dispatched in December 2023. The mission focused on the space sector, which is growing rapidly in Mongolia, with the aim of creating opportunities for new business ideas, open innovation, and corporate collaboration through observation tours and exchanges with local companies (click here for the introduction page in JETRO Business Brief).
On the first day, the participants visited the JICA Mongolia Office, where the mission secretariat explained the program and the JICA Mongolia Office explained the general situation in Mongolia and JICA projects focusing on the private sector. After that, they visited MobiCom, a consolidated subsidiary of KDDI and the largest comprehensive telecommunications company in Mongolia, and were briefed on the business environment and business strategy in Mongolia. They also visited the “Japan-Mongolia International Business Innovation Forum 2024” (Business Forum 2024) organized by JICA and others. At this forum, panel discussions and presentations were held by Japanese and Mongolian companies and organizations on themes such as export promotion, trade and investment promotion, SDGs business, ICT and digital industry promotion, and innovation between the two countries. About 100 Japanese and 400 Mongolian participants attended the forum (click here for more details). The participants also observed presentations by Japanese and Mongolian companies and organizations on solutions to social issues during the “Open Innovation for Solving Social Issues in Mongolia (MICS2024)” held during the forum (click here for details on MICS).
On the second and third days, the participants visited the Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation and Communications, local accelerator KITE Mongolia, major local financial institution Trade and Development Bank (TDB), Mongolian DX Promotion Association (DX Mongolia), local FinTech company AND The participants received explanations on Mongolia’s investment environment, activities of local startup companies including those in the space sector, financial environment, etc., and deepened their understanding of the local situation necessary for innovation creation. At the end of the mission, through the “JETRO Innovation Mission Networking,” mission participants gave reverse pitches and had active discussions and business negotiations with local companies and organizations.
Many of the companies participating in the mission made positive comments such as “I was able to make acquaintances with a great number of local companies and people involved,” “I was able to get a firsthand understanding of the local situation in Mongolia and deepen my understanding,” and “We immediately received concrete proposals for business collaboration, and I felt the positive attitude of the Mongolian side. I felt the Mongolian side’s positive attitude.
