Posted on 2024-09-032024-10-18 by Editor in Chief

On Wednesday, August 28, 2024, a reception was held to welcome 308 JDS students from 20 countries around the world and a total of 414 guests, including representatives from the embassies of JDS target countries in Tokyo, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, host universities, and JICA. The purpose of this event was to welcome JDS students who are expected to play an active role as a bridge between Japan and Japan, and to promote networking through exchanges with related parties.

The international students who came to Japan this time will study expertise in planning and implementation of social and economic development programs at 29 universities across Japan for two years for master’s students and three years for doctoral students, starting in September.

What is JDS?

JICA has been implementing JDS since FY1999 as a grant aid program under the Japanese government’s “100,000 Foreign Students Plan”. JICA has accepted students from 23 countries to date, including those who came to Japan in FY2024. The number of students who have graduated from the program is over 6,300, including those who came to Japan in FY2024.

In his opening remarks, JICA President Tanaka welcomed the JDS students, including those from Ukraine, a new country, to Japan and expressed his hope that they would learn from Japan’s development experience, contribute to development issues in their own countries, and serve as a bridge between Japan and Japan.
