On September 6, an advance opening ceremony was held at “Grand Green Osaka,” the second phase of the Umekita area north of JR Osaka Station, and “JAM BASE,” the core facility of the area, opened at the same time.
JAM BASE is a base for students, entrepreneurs, universities, research institutes, start-ups, venture capitalists, and local communities in the Umekita area to come together to give shape to new ideas and to work toward their social implementation and commercialization. JAM BASE will play a central role in the “Grand Green Osaka,” a large-scale redevelopment project based on the concept of “fusion of greenery and innovation,” and will support the challenge through industry-government-academia collaboration.
The facility will be located on the first through ninth floors of the North Building in the North District, which was opened in conjunction with the opening of the new town, and will include rental offices, co-working space, members-only social space, conference rooms, and other facilities. The first two floors are occupied by the commercial facility “Gran Green Osaka Shops & Restaurants,” which includes not only restaurants but also JAM BASE stores and services such as “Avatar Lawson,” a future convenience store that utilizes avatars and generative AI, “My Gym,” an all-English fitness center for children, and “My Gym Osaka School. My Gym Grand Green Osaka,” an all-English children’s fitness center, and “Osaka University Mirai Souzou hive,” which exhibits the results of research and offers hands-on experience.
At the opening ceremony of JAM BASE, Mr. Toyonori Takahashi, Senior Managing Executive Officer of ORIX Real Estate Corporation, delivered a speech on behalf of the nine companies involved in the Grand Green Osaka development joint venture (Mr. Takahashi is also the representative director of Co-Creation Generator, which is responsible for managing the JAM BASE facility). Governor of Osaka Prefecture, Mr. Hirofumi Yoshimura, and Mayor of Osaka City, Mr. Hideyuki Yokoyama, also gave congratulatory speeches.
Governor Yoshimura expressed his hope that “Osaka is a city that creates new things and takes on new challenges, even if they fail, and JAM BASE will be the central base for this. Researchers, companies, universities, and government agencies will be mixed together like in “JAM,” and this will create a chemical reaction. I hope that new values and technologies will be created here, and that many people will play active roles.
