Introduced Green Car on JR Chuo Line Rapid and Ome Line; trial period without separate fare started on October 13.

Posted on 2024-09-102024-10-27 by Editor in Chief

JR East announced that green car service will begin on the Chuo Line Rapid and Ome Line in spring 2025, with two double-decker green cars connected to provide comfortable travel space in various directions in the Tokyo metropolitan area, centering on Tokyo Station.

The new trains will be all trains operated by E233 series trains (orange-belt trains) on the Chuo Line Rapid between Tokyo and Otsuki, and all trains between Tachikawa and Ome on the Ome Line that operate directly with the Chuo Line Rapid (Tokyo direction). The specific start date will be announced at a later date.

Prior to this, 12-car trains with green cars will be introduced sequentially from October 13, and until the service begins in spring 2025, passengers will be able to experience the comfort of riding in a “green car trial period” during which they will not be charged green fares (treated as regular cars).

The double-decker green cars are the first to feature double doors, a wide deck, and automatic swivel seats for smooth boarding and disembarking to shorten the time required for onboard maintenance at turnaround stations such as Tokyo Station. The same seating capacity as before (180 passengers in total for the two cars) is secured.

The seats are swivel reclining seats, and all seats are equipped with power outlets, tables, and drink holders. JR-EAST FREE Wi-Fi, toilets, and trash cans are available on board, and a “Green Attendant” crew member will provide information services.

After the service starts, green fares will be the same as those on other lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and a “regular train green ticket (unreserved seat)” will need to be purchased separately from the train ticket or commuter pass. The Suica Green Fare, which allows passengers to skip on-board ticket gates and sit smoothly, is a bargain: for example, 750 yen (paper ticket: 1010 yen) for up to 50 km, and 1,000 yen (paper ticket: 1,260 yen) for up to 100 km.
