You may have heard that the average American family “doesn’t cook”. If you look around you, you will find that many people actually like to cook, and their (his/her) families serve home-cooked meals. On the other hand, there are quite a few people who do not cook, compared to Japan. In such cases, they either take out or eat out.
There is a true story of a student from Japan who came to study at an English conversation school in Hawaii and did a homestay with a family that went to the same restaurant for dinner almost every day during his three-month stay. What are the locals eating in this high cost of living, including such families?
Liliha Bakery has been a favorite of locals since its establishment in Liliha in 1950 as a bakery and coffee shop where you can buy freshly baked cakes and pastries. 2014, the bakery finally started to expand its storefronts, landing at Nimitz Highway, Ala Moana, and in Waikiki in 2021, Nimitz Highway, Ala Moana, and in 2021, Waikiki.
Even though it is essentially a coffee shop, it now offers a wide variety of food options. Because of its local roots, the taste is very Hawaiian, and most of the menu items are under $20. Naturally, the portions are generous. The key point is that breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus are the same price. In addition, you can order from the breakfast menu all day long. For the reason that …… is a great place to ask, “Where do you want to have dinner?” or “A cup of tea and a sweet treat? or “Do you want to go to rehearsal anyway? Often, it becomes “Let’s go to the rehearsal anyway.
Most menus come with rice, salad, and the “famous” butter roll named “Famous Butter Roll. Unlike Japanese butter rolls, these are not rolled but browned. The fluffy, buttery dough is served with brightly colored raspberry jelly.
Before the meal, this time they also served clam chowder, but this is not on the menu. What’s the mistake? A service? I thought so, and enjoyed it, although it was a bit strong.
I ordered the Chicken Katsulette ($18.95). In Japan, pork is the most common type of cutlet, but in Hawaii, chicken is the basic type. Incidentally, pork cutlet is positioned as a “Japanese feast.
I have been hooked on this chicken cutlet ever since an acquaintance recommended it to me. It is a “do” local food, made of thinly-stretched chicken, deep-fried, and topped with a generous amount of gravy. The gravy is familiar from loco moco, but it has an addictive taste that makes the rice go faster. This is a true taste of Hawaii, and I highly recommend you try it.
I ordered fried chicken for the first time because it was the chef’s recommendation. I could choose between two or three pieces of chicken, but since the price was only $1.50, I chose the three-piece option, and the chicken came out bigger than I had imagined. The chicken was crispy fried, soft and juicy inside, and well seasoned. I enjoyed it hot and delicious.
In addition to this, here is another dish I had last time and would like to repeat: Eggs Florentine. Scrambled eggs with spinach are served on cornbread. Cornbread is a standard American bread made from corn flour. It is moist and tender, with a hint of sweetness. This dish allows you to experience the taste of America while savoring the excellent combination of cornbread and eggs.
For drinks, try the Plantation Iced Tea, which spreads a tropical flavor. This drink is a mixture of black tea and pineapple juice and is inseparable from Hawaii, where pineapple plantations flourished. It has become a standard drink menu item at local restaurants.
Naturally, I couldn’t finish the meal, so I took it home for another meal. Even though I was full, I wanted to take a peek at the bakery corner on my way home. There is always a line of homemade breads and cakes waiting for their turn. In particular, the “Coco Puff,” introduced in 1990, is a signature pastry, and there may be no locals who do not know about it. The combination of puff pastry and sweet and salty cream made from a secret recipe is an irresistible sweet treat. Bring it as a souvenir and you will definitely be delighted.
For reference, the conveniently accessible Waikiki store is located on the third floor of the International Market Place and has a very nice open-air atmosphere with terrace seating. However, the price is about $2 to $3 higher than other restaurants, so-called “Waikiki price”. However, when you consider that you can have dinner for only a little over $20 per person, it is a very valuable restaurant in Waikiki.
