Machimori Real Estate and Machimori will open Nagisayu (16-7 Nagisamachi, Atami, Shizuoka Prefecture), the first public bathhouse in Atami City in 35 years, in mid-October. Prior to the opening, the company opened an official website and began accepting membership applications from September 21 for monthly and one-time use by local residents.
Nagisayu is a members-only public bathhouse renovated from an unused property in the Nagisamachi area that still retains the atmosphere of the Showa period. The number of public bathhouses in Atami is fewer than in the past because people can now draw hot spring water from their homes, but many of the “bathless dwellings” from the days when public bathhouses existed still remain as vacant houses. The company aims to make the most of this and create a hot spring that can be used casually by both tourists and locals as a spot where people can feel the lifestyle of Atami.
Membership is required, but one-time use is also possible. The bathing fee is 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children under 12 years old. General membership is 7,500 yen per month, and a flat rate of 500 yen for neighborhood residents for one-time use.
Hot water is drawn from a nearby hot spring pipe from the Naginashiyu storage tank. There is one bathtub for men and one for women, and two washing stations for men and women. Amenities include shampoo, body soap, and conditioner, and towels are available for purchase for 200 yen (bath towels must be brought).
Art director Koichi Kosugi will paint a mural in the bathhouse. The logo art will also be used for signage and merchandise in the bathhouses.
