On September 22, 2024, Professor Hiroshi Amano of Nagoya University, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics (2014), visited the Uzbek-Japan Innovation Center of Youth (UJICY).
UJICY was established in 2016 by agreement between the governments of Uzbekistan and Japan, and serves as a “hub” for industry-academia collaboration, promoting innovation through collaboration between research institutions, universities, and companies in both countries. The Center has been implementing JICA’s technical cooperation projects since 2019, and is also an implementing agency of the SATREPS (International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Program for Global Issues).
This discussion with Prof. Amano was jointly conducted by UJICY, Nagoya University, and Tashkent University of Technology, and was attended by 15 young researchers from Uzbekistan.
In the first half of the session, Professor Amano explained the DII Collaborative Graduate Program (https://www.dii.engg.nagoya-u.ac.jp/), which aims to develop human resources capable of achieving within 10 years what would take 30 years of innovation. The session deepened our understanding of the skills that researchers need. He explained that it is said that it takes about 30 years to develop a new technology, and that investors will not wait for the innovation, so it is important for researchers to have an entrepreneurial mindset and to co-create with business people in order to accelerate innovation in a short period of time. I learned that in order to accelerate innovation in a short period of time, it is important for researchers to have an entrepreneurial mindset and to co-create with business people.
In the latter half of the session, Professor Amano and the young researchers engaged in a heated discussion that lasted for two hours. The discussion covered a wide range of topics, including the skills that engineers should acquire in the future, tips for collaboration between researchers and companies, points to keep in mind while conducting experiments, and the future development of LED technology.
The discussion ended with a declaration that UJICY and the researchers who participated in this event will continue to collaborate in the future.
DO. INSPIRE. LEAD.
It is about “demonstrating leadership, involving others, acting responsibly toward a common goal, and stimulating innovation and new ideas through teamwork.” Through dialogue with Professor Amano, we had the opportunity to reaffirm the importance of this UJICY motto.
We would like to thank Professor Amano for coming all the way to Uzbekistan.
