Progress on the undergrounding of the Nihonbashi section and the Shin-Kyobashi connecting road In the Higashi-Shinagawa Pier and Samezu Reclaimed Section, “renewal downstream line work” is underway in the space between the renewal upstream line and the Tokyo Monorail, with the installation of piers completed in the Higashi-Shinagawa Pier section. Bridge face work, including floor slab and railing work, is underway, and in the Samezu Reclaimed Section, bridge face work has been completed and drainage work has begun. For the undergrounding project of the Nihonbashi section, a briefing session was held in June in preparation for the start of tunneling and other on-site work. Currently, work is underway to widen the river for in-river construction. In addition, for the Shin-Kyobashi Linkage, which will connect the Central Tokyo Loop (C1) and Yaesu Line (Y) underground as a replacement for Edobashi JCT, which will be partially closed due to the undergrounding of the Nihonbashi section, a site compensation briefing was held in August, and site surveys and building surveys are currently being conducted. In addition, the company has begun boring surveys and exploratory excavation work for underground buried objects, etc., prior to the main construction work. Land is currently being acquired for the “Shin-Omiya Ageo Road,” a new construction project for the Yono Interchange to Ageo Minami Interchange (tentative), which will lead north of the Metropolitan Expressway Route 5 and the Saitama New Urban Center Route (S2), and ground improvement and girder assembly at the Yono JCT entrance and exit, and bridge abutment construction at the exit are being conducted ahead of other work.

Plans to Expand Tire- and Fuel-Efficient Eco-Safe Pavement The company also announced plans to actively adopt Eco-Safe Pavement, a fine-textured pavement with a surface layer of a “small grain porous asphalt mixture” developed independently by the company for environmental improvement and safety. The features of Eco-safe pavement include low deformation of tire rubber, high fuel efficiency, only one replacement in 30 years, low noise, low pothole generation, and good drainage to control water splashing and slipping. Of the 6.35 million m2 of total pavement area of the Metropolitan Expressway, 2.08 million m2, or 33%, is currently paved with EcoSafe pavement, and this will be increased to 465 m2, or 73%, by 2034. This is expected to improve the fuel efficiency of passing vehicles and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 57,000 tons per year.
