First Roundtable Meeting with Development Cooperation Agencies of ASEAN Countries | News & PR

Posted on 2024-10-042024-11-03 by Editor in Chief

JICA invited representatives of development cooperation organizations from ASEAN countries to Tokyo on September 30 and October 1, 2024 for a round table meeting at JICA Headquarters to reflect the voices of ASEAN and Japan on international trends in development cooperation. From ASEAN countries, Indonesian AID and its International Development Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Malaysia, Technical Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore, National Economic Development and Cooperation Agency (NEDA) of Thailand and its International Cooperation Bureau, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (TICA) participated in the meeting.

At this round table meeting, the participants confirmed that they will contribute to solving the world’s development challenges based on their common and unique knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned from their own self-help efforts to promote economic growth and poverty reduction while utilizing foreign assistance as recipient countries, and that they will deepen their cooperation with each other as equal partners. The participants also agreed to deepen their cooperation as equal partners. The participants also agreed to cooperate and contribute to development cooperation not only within the ASEAN region but also in South Asia, the Pacific region, the Middle East, and Africa.

The ASEAN countries, with their rapidly growing economies, are playing an increasingly important role in the international community, and they are beginning to take on the role of “bearer” rather than “recipient” of development cooperation for developing countries. ASEAN countries are playing an increasingly important role in the international community.

JICA has been involved in “triangular cooperation” for about 30 years, supporting the establishment of development cooperation agencies in ASEAN countries and assisting their cooperation with other developing countries (South-South cooperation). JICA and the development cooperation agencies of ASEAN countries have learned from each other and built a relationship of mutual trust through working together on development cooperation in other countries.

As Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, JICA will continue to strengthen its network with ASEAN partners and work to solve global development issues as a co-creating partner, leveraging each other’s strengths in the ever-changing and evolving international relationship.
