The Mampei Hotel was founded 130 years ago in 1894. It is a classic hotel in Karuizawa, one of the most famous highland resorts in Japan, and has been a favorite of many cultural and political figures. It is especially famous that John Lennon made the hotel his regular summer home in the 1970s. The words of the hotel’s founder, Mr. Mampei Sato, “Hospitality is the heart, and the hotel is the people,” have been passed down through the generations for more than a century.
Cafe Terrace, Bar, Dining Restaurant
Let’s start with the “Café Terrace,” which is “the most famous place in Manpira Hotel! Let’s start with the “Café Terrace,” which is “the most famous place in Mampei Hotel. This café is open to non-guests as well, and 90% of the guests are from outside the hotel. Incidentally, as a native of Nagano City, it has long been a dream of mine to have tea at this café terrace (and I have yet to fulfill it).
On the café terrace, which has been renovated to brighten up the atmosphere while retaining the atmosphere of the past, you can enjoy the popular “traditional apple pie” menu, hotel-made ice cream, seasonal tarts, and other items while enjoying the typical Karuizawa scenery.
Among them, the classic royal milk tea is a staple menu item that John Lennon taught the staff how to make at the time. It is perfect for the coming cold season.
Next to the café terrace is a “store” offering original Mampei Hotel products and other items. New products such as “Mampei Hotel Premium Cookie Tins” were introduced at this reopening. The hotel’s traditional apple pie is also sold as a souvenir. The type of apple is different from the apple pie served at the café.
In the main dining room, which has been reborn with renewed carpeting and a new wine cellar, you can enjoy American-style breakfast (from 5,750 yen), classic lunch (from 9,200 yen), and French dinner (from 18,975 yen) with traditional flavors. You may want to dress up a bit and enjoy the classical atmosphere. Incidentally, the dress code is smart casual.
Stepping into “The Bar” is like stepping back in time. The bar has also been renovated by replacing the furniture and carpeting while keeping as much of the previous structure as possible. Signature cocktails include the vodka-based “Foggy Karuizawa” and the gin-based “Sunset in Karuizawa.
