President Tanaka Visits the U.S.: Meets with the World Bank, IMF, U.S. Government Agencies, etc. | News & PR

JICA President Akihiko Tanaka visited the U.S. from September 17 to 21 to discuss development issues and responses to global challenges with representatives of international organizations and U.S. government agencies, as well as to communicate Japan’s development cooperation on the 70th anniversary of international cooperation through lectures at think tanks.

We have been discussing with the World Bank Group (WBG) through the “Deep Dive” high-level dialogue to strengthen collaboration at both the headquarters and field levels. In a meeting with World Bank President Ajay Banga, we agreed to continue and deepen our collaboration on the two priority themes of global health and private sector finance, as well as on the achievements of our collaboration in Southeast Asia. We also agreed to strengthen our collaboration in Africa and the Pacific region.

In a meeting with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, we welcomed the collaboration in strengthening Africa’s debt management capacity and agreed to continue to work together to support developing countries, recognizing that low growth and heavy debt burdens in developing countries are challenges.

In the meeting with Ilan Goldfein, President of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), we exchanged views on strengthening collaboration based on the “Cooperation for Economic Recovery and Social Inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean (CORE),” a co-financing scheme between JICA and IDB expanded through a Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) signed in January 2024, as well as on strengthening multilayered collaboration through co-financing for the private sector. The participants exchanged views on strengthening cooperation based on the “Cooperation for Economic Recovery and Social Inclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean (CORE),” a co-financing scheme between JICA and IDB that was expanded and expanded in the month of March.

  1. 70th Anniversary of Japan’s International Cooperation in Development Cooperation

President Tanaka delivered a keynote speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) event, “The Future of Development Cooperation in a World of Chaos. In his speech, he pointed out the importance of partner country ownership, human resource development and empowerment, and long-term commitment, while discussing key points to enhance the effectiveness of development cooperation in a divided world, citing examples of cooperation in the construction of the Indian Delhi rapid transit system, SHEP, an emerging market-oriented agricultural approach, and peacebuilding in Mindanao, the Philippines. He also pointed out the importance of long-term commitment. In addition, he conveyed his commitment to contribute to sustainable development in cooperation with the U.S. and other countries under the current difficult circumstances.

At the roundtable at the Wilson Center, participants reflected on the history and characteristics of Japan’s development cooperation, and exchanged views with experts on the role of development cooperation in times of conflict and division, and future engagement with countries in the Indo-Pacific region.
