Emergency relief supplies provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for forest fire damage in the Plurinational State of Bolivia have been delivered to the country.
The emergency relief supplies to be provided to Bolivia will be a set of firefighting uniforms, equipment, and materials for the firefighting teams that are working on the front lines of firefighting activities, with the aim of facilitating firefighting activities in response to forest fires, The ceremony was attended by Mr. Juan Carlos Calvimontes, Bolivian Vice Minister of Defense, and Mr. Takushi Onomura, Japanese Ambassador to Bolivia, and Ms. Sachiko Komiyama, Deputy Director General of the JICA Bolivia Office, from Japan.
At the handover ceremony, Mr. Calvimontes, Deputy Minister of Defense, expressed President Arce’s deep appreciation for Japan’s support and stated that the supplies would be provided to 600 additional firefighters who will be mobilized for firefighting activities.
In response, Ambassador Onomura stated that both countries share a commitment to protect the environment and communities affected by forest fires, and that with this new partnership, Japan will support Bolivia in disaster management and further strengthen cooperation for sustainable development.
JICA plans to support the further strengthening of Bolivia’s capacity to prevent, respond to, and recover from forest fires through the use of satellite data-based information under the “Project for Strengthening the Capacity to Promote the Use of Satellite Imagery for Forest Fire Fighting,” which will begin in 2025 as a technical cooperation project.
