On October 9, 2024, a completion ceremony for the grant aid “Bujumbura Port Rehabilitation Project” was held in Bujumbura*, the economic capital of Burundi. The ceremony was attended by President Evariste Ndaisimiye and key ministers from Burundi, and Ambassador Isao Fukushima, JICA Director Naoki Ando, and JICA Rwanda Office Director Minako Shiotsuka (also in Burundi) from Japan.

(*Political function location is Gitega.)

Located at the northern end of Lake Tanganyika, almost in the center of the African continent, the Port of Bujumbura is the largest port in Burundi and the largest on the lake. Most of the facilities were built before 1960 and had deteriorated, and the port faced the challenge of not being able to handle the increasing volume of cargo handled due to the rapid economic development of neighboring countries in recent years.

Construction of a container terminal and ship repair facility, as well as the relocation of a drainage channel, under this cooperation started in 2019 with the aim of solving these issues, promoting trade with neighboring countries, including those in Southeast Africa, reducing transportation costs for imported and exported cargo, and improving the safety of transportation on the lake. . Although construction was suspended twice during the project due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection, it was finally completed thanks to the tireless efforts of the destination government and other related parties toward reconstruction and economic development following the domestic conflicts of the 1990s.

At the completion ceremony, President Evariste Ndaisimiye expressed his gratitude for JICA’s cooperation in Burundi and expressed his desire to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
