Expedia has released “Unpack ’25,” its travel trends for 2025. The report was compiled from a survey of 25,000 people in 19 regions around the world, including Japan, in addition to data from Expedia, Hotels.com and other group companies (survey period: August 5 to September 2, 2024). On October 15, Natsuko Kimura, Representative Director of Expedia Holdings and General Director of Expedia Group Retail Japan, explained the six themes.
The Age of All-Inclusive Hotels In the survey, 42% of Generation Z said they prefer all-inclusive hotels. Since only 38% of respondents in Japan have actually used all-inclusive hotels, compared to the global average (68%), this is a theme that is likely to grow in the future. As a trend, “Although far from Japan and unfamiliar, all-inclusive hotels are compatible with areas such as the Maldives, a staple for honeymooners, and Cancun, Mexico, where people swim and hang out by the hotel pool or on the beach in front of the hotel,” according to the survey.
Gourmet-Focused Hotel Selection According to Hotels.com reviews (compiled from January 1 to July 4, 2023 and January 1 to July 4, 2024), reviews about hotel restaurants and bars have increased 40%. Many people, especially in other countries, place a high value on priority restaurant reservations and room service.”
Location tours are expected to continue to be a trend in 2025 2024. Social media such as Instagram (43%) and Facebook (35%) are the top influences on travel destinations worldwide, while in Japan, traditional media is more influential with TV shows (68%) and books (39%).
