On October 17, Hoshino Resort announced that it will open its first operated facility in the continental United States, an onsen ryokan, in 2028. The location is “Sharon Springs” in New York State, USA.
Sharon Springs is a historic hot springs resort about 3.5 hours by car from Manhattan, where Native Americans used the mineral springs for their healing properties in ancient times, and was developed as a resort area in the mid-1800s. The company hopes to contribute to the revitalization of the area by opening a hot spring inn with the cooperation of the local community.
Hoshino Resort’s brand of onsen ryokan is “Kai,” featuring open-air baths that take full advantage of the four seasons and regional characteristics. In making an entry into the U.S. mainland, Yoshimichi Hoshino, President of Hoshino Resort, said, “Having a base in North America and establishing a foothold there is necessary for our long-term sustainability. Based on the lessons learned from the previous bubble economy that did not work out, we will create a Japanese onsen ryokan that is easily accepted by the market and captures the hearts and minds of the people,” he explained. He suggests that the concept will reflect Japanese culture, but does not reveal the specific brand or content of the facility to be opened.
This is the first time a Japanese hotel company has opened an onsen ryokan in the United States.
