On October 17, JR West announced that it had developed a blade-proof umbrella suitable for use inside railroad cars and that it would gradually install it in its trains.
The blade-proof umbrella is made of a material that is difficult to cut and has a high-strength frame, with a longer handle to ensure distance from the person carrying the blade. They are lighter than acrylic shields, making them easy to handle even for non-strong people.
The plan is to install these devices in trains running in the Kinki region, with the aim of evacuating passengers to another train car or allowing time for evacuation in the event of a confrontation between a knife-wielding criminal and a station staff member. In addition, the train cars will be equipped with knife-proof gloves and other crime prevention items.
