JICA President Akihiko Tanaka met with Ms. Nardos Bekele-Thomas, CEO of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), at JICA headquarters on October 2.

At the beginning of the meeting, President Tanaka thanked JICA for its cooperation with AUDA-NEPAD, which has resulted in the areal expansion of JICA’s cooperation on the African continent. He also expressed his desire to strengthen cooperation with AUDA-NEPAD in order to develop effective cooperation that will benefit the entire continent in line with the African Union’s development plan, such as Agenda 2063.

In response, Secretary Bekele-Thomas thanked JICA for the opportunity to visit Yokohama, where TICAD 9 will be held next year, and to exchange views with representatives of development cooperation agencies of ASEAN countries, in addition to the discussions on cooperation with JICA during her visit to Japan. He expressed his hope that JICA would share not only its experience of cooperation with ASEAN countries, but also the development experience of ASEAN countries through JICA’s cooperation, with African countries at TICAD 9 and other events.

The two sides then signed a one-year extension of the Memorandum of Cooperation for 2021 with five priority areas of cooperation, including kaizen, food and nutrition, and regional integration. Secretary Bekele-Thomas expressed hope to further expand these areas of focus for cooperation at TICAD 9.
