Nexco East Japan Area Tract will open the nation’s first unmanned sales outlet at 11:00 a.m. on November 21 at the Tobu-Yunomaru SA (downhill line) on the Joshinetsu Expressway.
Utilizing TOUCH TO GO’s unattended payment system, which has been installed in convenience stores, souvenir and specialty stores, and mini-supermarkets, the store will offer a selection of souvenirs and sweets, including the local specialty “Toge no Kamameshi”.
At NEXCO East Japan’s regular press conference held on October 30, Hideo Yoshimi, General Manager of Service Area and New Business Division, gave an overview of the store.
The store is one-way, and when a user picks up (or returns) an item from the shelf, the camera recognizes their face and movement. At the cash register in front of the exit, shopping is completed simply by checking the contents of the display and making payment, without having to read the merchandise.
Mr. Yoshimi informed that, “As part of our efforts to unmanned SA/PAs, we have so far introduced ‘Seven vending machines’ for original Seven-Eleven products, but TTG’s system can handle a wider range of products.
He added, “We would like to meet the diversifying needs of individuals by offering a wider variety of items without closing at night. We would like to test different patterns in terms of hours and number of customers, and eventually increase the number of stores in front of the facility (outside the building),” he said.
