JAL, which has bases throughout Japan, has been continuously implementing regional revitalization initiatives (currently the “JAL Furusato Project”), and in August 2020 launched the “JAL Furusato Ambassadors,” cabin crew members selected through an in-house recruitment process who move to the area to promote initiatives in their respective regions. In December of the same year, JAL appointed “JAL Hometown Cheering Troops” who are involved in regional revitalization while serving on board. The aim is to develop products and solve regional issues for hometowns and other regions with which they have connections, utilizing the knowledge they have accumulated as flight attendants.
We spoke with Haruna Uesugi, a JAL Furusato Ambassador who is involved in the 30th anniversary events of Tajima Airport at the West Japan Branch Office.
–What can you tell us about your initiatives?
You may have heard of the Stork Tajima Airport in Hyogo Prefecture, which is operated by Japan Air Commuter (JAC), a wing of the JAL Group, and is the sole airport for JAL Group flights. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the airport’s opening, and we are planning a variety of measures to mark the occasion.
First of all, “2024 Stork Tajima Airport 30th Anniversary Sky Day Special Event” was held on October 19. The event included a ceremony to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the opening of the airport, a lecture by a flight attendant on her work, a chance to try out the uniform, an origami airplane class, and other JAL events.
–How are you involved in this effort?
As a hometown ambassador, I was in charge of giving a lecture on the work of flight attendants. I was very moved to see children who want to be flight attendants in the future eagerly taking notes.
Even though the weather was not favorable, many visitors came to the event, and the “dress up in uniform” experience and origami airplane class were a great success. We are happy if the children who participated in the event were able to feel familiar with airplanes and the aviation industry, even if only a little.
–What are your future plans and prospects?
We are pleased to announce that the information board in the arrival lobby of the airport has been redesigned to commemorate our 30th anniversary. It is titled “Travel in Tajima. Eight Other Worlds to Explore”, which introduces attractive spots in an easy-to-understand manner. I was excited to read the bulletin board because there are some spots I have not visited yet. The information also includes how long it takes to get from the airport to each attraction, so you can see it at a glance.
–What is your message to travelers?
The flight from Tokyo Haneda Airport to Stork Tajima Airport takes about 2 hours via Osaka Itami. You can enjoy the scenery that only a small aircraft can offer. In the coming season, you will surely be able to enjoy the popular “Kinosaki Onsen” and “Yumura Onsen” in the Tajima area and gourmet “Matsuba Gani” (Matsuba Crab) and “Tajima Beef”! We hope you will come and visit us.
