Yamapu announced that the Ministry of the Environment newly designated the area around the triple Kekachi peaks, a mountain range between Uozu City and Kurobe City in Toyama Prefecture, as a nationally designated Northern Alps Bird Sanctuary on November 1.
This was due to the fact that the Ministry of the Environment was able to confirm the breeding of grouse in response to sightings of what appeared to be a family of grouse received from climbers on the company’s “Grouse Monitor,” which visualizes the grouse habitat area.
YAMAP” identifies the location of photos posted by climbers and displays them on a map of Japan, while an AI-based image identification function makes grouse sightings visible on a map of Japan.
In 2012, the grouse was upgraded from “Endangered II” to “Endangered IB” on the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List of Threatened Species, and its survival is still in jeopardy.
